HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein
Wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum
Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai
Born on May 3rd 1974, Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein is the
daughter of HM Late King Hussein Bin Talal of Jordan (1935-1999) and HM Late Queen Alia
Al Hussein (1948-1977). On April 10th 2004, HRH Princess Haya was married to HH Sheikh
Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of
Dubai, and now resides with her husband in Dubai, traveling to her homeland Jordan often.
HRH Princess Haya and HH Sheikh Mohammed were blessed with the birth of HH Sheikha Al
Jalila Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum on December 2nd, 2007. HH Sheikha Al Jalila's
birth coincided with the celebrations of UAE's 36th National Day.
Among her various international and regional activities, Princess Haya's main
concentration is focused on humanitarian aid, with a core interest in promoting health,
education, youth and sports through working closely with various regional and global charities
and social organizations.
In September 2007, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon named Princess
Haya as a UN Messenger of Peace on the annual International Day of Peace. The United
Nations Messenger of Peace is the highest honor bestowed by the United Nations Secretary-General on a global citizen to raise public awareness and support for issues such as the
eradication of poverty and human rights.
This was followed, in October 2007, with an invitation by former UN Secretary General
Kofi Annan to become a founder member of the Board of Directors of the Global Humanitarian
Forum, which he heads in Geneva. Previously, Princess Haya was the first Arab and first
woman to serve as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program from
2005-2007, and is also Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City (IHC) in Dubai.
As a long-time athlete in equestrian sports, Princess Haya is the first Arab woman to
compete in equestrian at Olympic, world and continental championship level. In 2007, the
International Olympic Committee elected Princes Haya as a Member of the IOC. On May 1st
2006, Her Royal Highness was elected as President of the International Equestrian Federation
(FEI) and therefore became the first Arab to occupy this international position.
In February 2006, HM King Abdullah Bin Al Hussein II of Jordan bestowed the
Bejeweled Grand Cordon of Al Nahda (Order of the Renaissance) on Princess Haya in
recognition of her notable humanitarian efforts both in Jordan and internationally. The Al Nahda
is the highest decoration in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
HRH Princess Haya graduated from St Hilda's College, Oxford University with an
Honors Degree BA MA, in P.P.E. (Politics, Philosophy and Economics).
